Fatal Pulmonary Embolism: Hystological Analysis In general, the structure resembles that of the adrenal cortex. Individual cells are poorly defined, with a vacuolated or granular pink cytoplasm. Nuclei are heavily stained and show fine chromatin reticulation. They vary considerably in size and shape. Giant nuclei are frequent usually in mononuclear but occasionally in multi-nucleated cells. Vascular channels are scanty, mitosis are infrequent, there is much necrosis, and decalcification in the necrotic areas is common. Much fat present. The material gives a strongly positive fuchsinophil reaction. The appearance are those of a malignant tumor of the adrenal cortex
