it almost touches the sky
it reaches high into the clouds
as high as a bird can fly
against the amber evening sky
it silhouette stands out
like some king or emperor
statue majestic and proud.

There’s a tree on Soltry Hill
that embraces the whole world
a cover for dale below.
A safe haven for all the birds.

Untouchable and strong it stands
no gale or thunderstorm
no heat or cold flood or drought
have ever done it harm.

it bears a single scar
two names hardly legible
are carved into the bark.

it out lived you and me
the utter loneliness of living
through eternity.
